No one can relax when wasps are buzzing around. These black-and-yellow-striped pests can quickly turn a summer picnic into a nightmare. Wasps live in large colonies inside nests. A sting from a single wasp can be very painful, so it's best to keep out of their way! Here's what you need to know about wasps, how to prevent them and how you can get rid of them.
You'll find wasps almost everywhere. As the weather warms up, they search for proteins – like meat and cheese – to feed their larvae, which then excrete a sugary liquid that the adults consume. By late summer, the number of larvae decreases, leaving the adults without enough secretions to sustain them. They seek alternative sources of nutrition, which are often the sweet, sugary foods and drinks we enjoy during the summer.
Wasps are most active during the warmer months. Typically, only the queen hibernates over winter, emerging in spring to build her nest. Her colony starts growing in early spring, and the wasp population peaks in late summer, when the new queens and males leave the nest to mate and find places to hibernate.
A single queen's nest can grow into a colony of up to 5,000 wasps, so having one near or in your home can be a concern.
Wasps aren't usually dangerous, but they can deliver vicious stings if they feel threatened. They defend their nests very aggressively, so you should never try to remove one yourself. Always call in a professional to remove it for you. Some people are allergic to wasp stings, which can be life-threatening. Even if you're not allergic, it's best to avoid a painful sting!
We'd all rather not deal with wasps and their nasty stings. Here are our 5 tips for keeping them away.
If a wasp comes too close, use a spray bottle to mist it with a little water. This makes the wasp think it's raining, causing it to fly back to its nest for shelter.
The food we discard can be a feast for wasps, and they love to hover around open bins. Ensure they can't access rubbish by keeping bins properly closed at all times.
Reduce the chances of wasps entering your home by fitting insect screens on windows and hanging fly curtains over doors.
As fruit rots, it releases sugars that are irresistible to wasps. If you have fruit trees in your garden, pick up any fallen fruit promptly to avoid attracting them.
Although annoying to us, wasps play a vital role in our ecosystem. So, instead of trying to kill them, encourage them to nest away from your home. If you have a large garden, leave some old fruit in a corner you rarely use. There's a good chance wasps will build their nest near this food source, keeping them well away from your living spaces.
Effective and sustainable pest control.
Super Ninja believes that sustainable and responsible pest control should be todays’ standard. Effective to remove nuisance, safe for people, pets, and the environment.
Due to a lack of sustainable pest control products and as a result of his own frustrations, in 2014, our founder Ferdinand developed our first product: the Fruit Fly Ninja.
While he was trapped at home with a knee injury - surrounded by fruit flies – he discovered how natural ingredients can be just as effective as chemical ones. Especially when combined into an innovative product design.
We believe in the power of natural ingredients and innovative designs.
We aim for a positive impact – without negative side effects.
We continuously search for more – and only the best - pest control solutions.
